...rural surreal #12

pure democracy you have two cows…
your neighbours decide who gets the milk…

singaporean democracy: you have two cows…
the government fines you for keeping

two unlicensed farm animals in an apartment…

american democracy: the government promises to give you two cows if you vote for it…
after the election, the president is impeached for speculating in cow futures…
the press dubs the affair "cowgate"…

british democracy: you have two cows…
you feed them sheep's brains and they go mad…

         the government doesn't do anything…

militarism: you have two cows…
the government takes both and drafts you…

dictatorship: you have two cows…
the government takes both and shoots you…

         capitalism: you have two cows…
you sell one and buy a bull…

hong kong capitalism: you have two cows… you sell three of them to your publicly listed        company, using letters of credit opened by your brother-in-law, then execute a debt/equity swap with associated general offer so that you get all four cows back, with a tax deduction for keeping five cows… the milk right for six cows are transferred via a panamanian intermediary to a cayman islands company secretly owned by the majority shareholder, who sells the rights to all seven cows' milk back to the listed company… the annual report says that the company owns eight cows, with an option on one more… meanwhile you kill the two cows because the feng shui isn't good…

  totalitarianism: you have two cows…
the government takes them and denies they ever existed…
milk is banned…

australian democracy: you have two bulls locking horns on top of the top paddock…
one is full of it… whilst your neighbours the dairy farmers get 22 cents a litre for their milk…

surrealism: you have two giraffes…
the government requires you to take harmonica lessons…

...rural surreal #11

...stopped my motorbike by the roadside on the princes highway... very very early in the morning after leaving the caravan park in ulladulla when it was still dark...

...
sometimes this lake is completely cut-off from the sea by sandbanks...
and when it does,
you get this mirror surface...

a warm fire

…on these cold winter's nights...and for once the south coast is colder than canberra; perhaps there's a lot of hot air coming from up there in capital hill...

a macabre quote came to mind…

terry pratchett, 65, an english author of fantasy novels who is suffering from alzheimer's, who plays video games (half-life 2, thief…), and who wishes to commit 'assisted death', once said:

                   'give a man a fire
and he is warm for a day,
but set a man on fire
and he is warm for the rest of his                                                    life.'

keep yourself warm, won't you?...whether with a cuppa, a cuddle, smiles, a book, fuzzy feelings, firewoods...
